I came across this story during my introduction to coaching and it really captured why I wanted to become a coach and mentor.

Once a man was walking along a beach. The sun was shining and it was a beautiful day. In the distance he could see a woman going back and forth between the surf's edge and the beach. Back and forth this woman went. As the man approached he could see there were hundreds of starfish stranded on the sand as the result of the natural action of the tide.
The man was struck by the apparent futility of the task. There were far too many starfish. Many of them were sure to perish. As he approached, the woman continued the task of picking up starfish one by one and throwing them into the sea.
As he came up to the woman he said "You must be crazy, there are thousands of miles of beach covered with starfish. You can't possibly make a difference." The woman looked at the man. She then stooped down and picked up one more starfish and threw it back into the sea. She turned back to the man and said "It's going to make a big difference to that one."
The next day the woman visited the beach to check on the starfish. She saw the the same man and his children throwing the starfish back into the sea. "Hello" he said with a twinkle in his eye. "We are here to make a difference to a few more starfish."
